Friends, as an injury attorney who specializes in car crashes, I too frequently see in my office severely hurt folks who are caught in a bind because the person who crashed into them did not have automobile insurance. Worse, perhaps, my injured client did not have insurance coverage either, or too little coverage.
The Tennessee legislature is planning to enforce its mandatory car insurance statutes in 2017 by not issuing license plate renewals and/or registration of your vehicle without proof that you have insurance. So, in the near future, you will have to have proof of automobile insurance to renew your license.
But, more importantly, it is smart for you to have this insurance to cover a serious injury you might very well get. A recent “Wall Street Journal” article cited statistics showing that automobile crashes have increased dramatically in 2016 , due to more cars on the road and the sorry condition of our highways. When you talk to your insurance agent, be sure to tell him or her that you want at least a $100,000-$300,000 uninsured provision under your policy. It is well worth the very small increase in your premiums. And will be one of the best New Year resolutions you can make and keep.
