Used to be, it was like an overflow parking lot on many Knoxville streets. I’m thinking of that westbound stretch on Kingston Pike from Kroger in Bearden to Northshore Drive. You’ve been there. You know what I’m talking about.
But lately that stretch has been delightfully free and open due to this “new normal.”
Problem is that with less auto congestion and police hesitant to issue speeding citations due to their fear of being exposed to the Coronavirus, folks, including yours truly, have been tempted to speed up. I mean, it’s hard to resist, and I know you know what I mean.
But here’s the downside to that temptation (why is there always a downside to temptation!?): Latest figures released by the National Safety Council reveal a significant uptick in fatal car crashes per miles driven. In other words, there may be less auto wrecks, but the ones occurring are much more severe due to increased speeds.
Bottom Line: Please don’t speed, regardless. Be extra wary of other cars on our streets and highways. Just be careful, because what’s the point of surviving the inconvenience of this Coronavirus quarantine only to get in an automobile accident due to carelessness.
