DWD: You’ve heard of DWI, driving while under the influence. That’ll not only get you injured but also in a heap of legal trouble.

Well, there’s also DWD, driving while distracted. That’s just as deadly, if not as legally precarious (hard to enforce).

Recently, while Janie and I were driving north from New York City to Maine, we saw and simultaneously heard a horrific car crash in the lane just right of us. The driver was obviously DWD to such an extent that she never applied her brakes in time to avoid rear-ending a large utility truck in front of her. The entire front end of her car was forced under the rear of the truck, resulting in automobile debris scattered all over the interstate and serious injury to the driver and her passenger.

The combination of the sight and sound of that crash has left an indelible reminder: Don’t DWD. Please!?
