It’s that time of year again in East Tennessee… Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years — they’re all right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate! However, while the G3 team is all about celebrating big this season, we also understand the importance of taking extra safety precautions around the holidays.

It’s no secret that with winter, comes hazardous road conditions, such as snow and ice. Every year, weather conditions like these are the cause of numerous automobile accidents. Don’t let that happen to you or your loved ones this season!

Stay Safe on Your Winter Roads

We want you to be safe on the road, so we’re here to help ensure that you are. Here are 4 helpful tips for staying safe behind the wheel this season.

  1. Plan Ahead! Before you go to bed, get into the habit of checking the weather for the next day. If there’s even a small chance that your roads will have snow or ice on them, use the tips below to keep safe.
  2. Carefully Assess the Road Conditions. In other words, if the roads are hazardous in any way, don’t risk your safety by driving on them. Work can wait. Seeing friends and loved ones can wait. Almost anything you have planned that day can wait. Even in an emergency, it’s important to assess the road conditions and make the best decision for your own personal safety. After all, you’re no help in an emergency situation if you also end up in one yourself!
  3. Drive Slow. The best tip we can give for winter road safety is to slow down on the road. Though the same speed limits you’re used to still apply, it’s always a good idea to drive under the legal limit during winter (and in the left-hand lane, of course). Better safe than sorry!
  4. Avoid Driving at Night. When possible, try to stay off the roads late at night during winter. In East Tennessee, it’s getting dark earlier due to daylight savings time. So, while we realize this may not always be a feasible option, it’s important to remember that the roads you’re used to driving on may not always be as safe as they appear. Hazards like black ice can appear almost invisible on the road, even with your headlights on.

When it comes to your safety this winter season, there’s no harm in taking extra precautions when possible. The number of accidents caused by hazards like snow and ice every year are already too high, and we don’t want you or your loved ones included in those statistics…

What to Do if You End Up in an Accident

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, accidents are simply unavoidable. After all, that’s why they’re called ‘accidents’! If you or someone you know gets in an accident due to extreme weather conditions this winter, you’ll want to know exactly what to do.

First, take a few deep breaths. Accidents can be scary, and sometimes you just need a few minutes to collect yourself after an incident on the road.

Next, assess your surroundings. Before getting out of your vehicle, take a moment to assess your situation. Do you feel pain anywhere? If so, stay still and call 911 for help. Is it safe to get out of your vehicle in this weather? If the temperature has reached freezing point or lower — or if the surrounding road conditions appear dangerous — don’t get out of the vehicle. Again, call for help and patiently wait for them to arrive on scene before venturing out of the vehicle.

If the accident was caused by extreme weather conditions, but just-so-happened to involve another person or vehicle, make sure to exchange insurance information. Whether or not there is a party at fault, each driver involved should obtain the proper information from the other.

If the other driver does not have insurance, make sure to get some basic contact information, such as a full name, a good contact number or email, and their standard vehicle description (make, model, and license plate number). Then, proceed to our final step…
